Sin DBS: From the Fruit to the Root
a DBS to identify the root of sin in Bible passages and stories
By Raimer Rojas
This Sin DBS is designed for the purpose of identifying the root of sin in Bible stories and passages. So for this DBS, we choose passages where a sin is committed and where there is enough material to analyze the nature of that sin. We can use it not just for analyzing an individual's sin but even for a group or corporate sin, as what happened after people aligned with the negative report of the Promise Land realities that came from the 12 spies.
When we get in the practice of analyzing sin in this way, we will be more empowered to identify the nature of our own sin with greater clarity and objectivity. This Sin DBS is perfect for helping people learn how to work our way back, in our own personal sin, to eventually identify the underlying ungodly belief(s) that paved the path to sin. It will also help us walk others to see the nature of their own sin; the root cause of their sin.
To begin,
Choose a passage/story in the Bible where a sin is committed.
Have three touches with that passage to get the facts and flow of the story down (by touches I mean you can read the passage in a different versions, have someone retell the story in their own words, etc.).
Proceed with the Sin DBS questions below to grow in insight and understanding, through the revelation of the Holy Spirit.
NOTE: This Sin DBS was inspired by these set of videos: Why We Actually Sin
PEOPLE
What does this story reveal about the sinful nature of people? About the posture and attitude of their hearts? About the intents and motives behind the sin we commit? How did this person(s) justify or rationalize their way into sin, through their own self-talk?
GOD
What does this story reveal about God's heart in this person's sin? Is there insight into how God was attempting to re-direct this person's life, prior to their sinful fall?

What was the actual sin? (the act of sin)
2. Temptation
What is/are the temptation(s) that lead to this sin?
3. Desire
What was being desired (at the heart and flesh level) that made this person an easy prey for temptation?
4. Lack
What was the lack being experienced by this person that made them desire a particular thing? This could be assumed (real or perceived)?
5. Ungodly Belief
What was the root/foundational belief (about God, myself or others), based on a lie, from which this person chose to live life, that opened the door for sin?
ME
What is God speaking to me about my own sinful ways? About my own foundational beliefs from which I am choosing to operate? What needs to change in me to align with God's way and to stay away from a sinful path that leads to destruction?
OBEY
How can I obey what God is speaking to me, this week?
