Singing The Scriptures:

Sing It, Pray It, Own It

a Biblical Meditation Practice by Julie Meyer

Meditating on God's Word

What Is Singing The Scriptures?

Singing the Scriptures is a practice of meditating on the Word of God by selecting a Bible verse or two and singing out of it. The focus is to linger on the Scriptures to draw deeper wisdom, revelation, insight and understanding of the heart of God. You also sing it aloud, with your own melody, for your own body, heart and mind to hear it and be impacted by it. And the practice is to continue to meditate on its message by singing it everywhere you go that day. A discovery you will soon make: Singing the Scriptures is the easiest and quickest way to remember it. The intent is to literally begin to own and live out the words and message of God's Word.

Directions:

  • Take 1-2 Bible verses you have chosen to meditate on and sing it aloud over yourself.

  • You can use an accompaniment to help you in the singing or you can just sing it acapella. If using an accompaniment instrument (guitar, ukulele, keyboard, etc...) or a track, use a simple, repeated and predictable chord progression (2-4 chords).

3 Easy Steps to Singing The Scriptures:

Sing It, Pray It, Own It

Word-for-Word > Me to God > God to Me

by Julie Meyer

1. SING IT (Word- for-Word) : Sing it Word-For-Word

Sing the Bible verse exactly the way it was written (you get to choose the Bible version).

Julie Meyer's Example:

  1. Sing It Word-For-Word > "I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!" - "Psalm 116: 1-2 NLT

2. PRAY IT (Me to God): Make It A Personal Prayer

Turn it into your own prayer to God, using your own words and melody.

Julie Meyer's Example:

  1. Sing It Word-For-Word > "I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!" - "Psalm 116: 1-2 NLT

  2. Make It A Personal Prayer > Lord I love You. I know You hear my voice. I know, right now, You are listening. You love the song that I sing. You are not too busy to hear this simple cry and song from my heart. I know that even now You are bending down just to hear my song. You love to hear the sound of my voice. So I will pray; I will sing forever.

3. OWN IT (God to Me): Prophesy It Over Yourself From God's Perspective

Sing it prophetically over your own heart as if God was singing it over you, and lay a hold of its truths.

  3. Prophesy It Over Yourself From God's Perspective > Julie, I hear your voice. I hear everything you say. And your voice is very lovely to Me. I love to hear your song every time you sing. Let Me see your face and let Me hear your voice. I created you. I created you with sounds and melodies in My heart, and I love it when you sing out. I love to hear your songs. Every time you sing, I am bending down to hear every word. Not one word is unnoticed, and not one word is unheard. So sing again and sing aloud. Let Me hear a fresh sound, for I love the way I made you. You are Mine and I am yours.
