The Spiritual Discipline of a

Daily Devotions

(Quiet Times with God)

Daily devotions refer to the practice of setting aside time each day to be with God and engage in spiritual activities. It is a time of communion with God rather than solely seeking to receive something from Him. Daily devotions can include various practices which may vary per person, such as prayer, Bible reading/studying/meditating, worship, silence, solitude, and observing the Sabbath. The purpose of daily devotions is to cultivate a deeper awareness of God's presence throughout the day and to nurture one's relationship with Him in order to grow towards spiritual maturity - to become more like Christ.

“The gospel brings man to God; devotions keep him close to God.” - anonymous

Key Parts of Daily Devotions (Facetime with God):

WORSHIP • BIBLE INTAKE • PRAYER • JOURNALING

What Can I Do During My Daily Devotional Times? (key elements)

1. Worship - high praise, thanking God for what He has done, appreciating God for who He is, practicing the presence of God, etc.

There are a lot of ways to approach a time of worship with God, but I also just want to make sure I don't become dependent on outside resources to do the work for me. I do not want to be passive or having only a receiving mode in worship, as when I just listening to a worship song I like. I must cultivate the ability to recognize that God is worthy of worship, be proactive in worshiping Him, and do so at the heart level (not just out of habit).

GUIDING QUESTION: "Am I just going through the motions or am I truly worshiping God with all my being?"

2. Bible Intake - Bible reading, Bible memorization, Bible study, Biblical meditations

Built in to these Bible intake practices, is the opening of my eyes and ears to hear God speak to me. Below are some things I can employ in my Bible Intake time of my daily devotional. Clearly, you and I, in all parts of the daily devotional, will have to make choices as to what to use and what not to use. Time will be the #1 factor. If all you have per day is 10 minutes then you will have to be very purposeful as to which of these many spiritual practices you might employ. These choices are hopefully made very honestly and strategically with your spiritual growth in mind.  Remember that you can vary which spiritual practice you use on a given day. So this would be a way to round out your times with God and His Word, over time, if time is a factor.

When you make more time in your daily devotionals, you can employ a few of these spiritual practices per day, with the encouragement to do something from each of these main categories.

GUIDING QUESTION: How am I loving and cherishing His Word? Am I consuming it regularly, memorizing verses, and studying and meditating on His Word so that continually receive truth from Him?

1) BIBLE READING

2) BIBLE MEMORIZATION

Target key Bible verses and/or passages for memorization. Having the word of God in mind allows you the ability to meditate and pray our of it at anytime.

3) BIBLE STUDY

4) BIBLICAL MEDITATION

I can use these and many more Biblical meditation practices to go deeper with a verse or passage. Often I can let the very Bible portion I want to focus on define which Biblical meditation practice I may use. As I have experienced these different way to meditate on Scripture, I can use what seems more logical or practical or just appropriate, with the text at hand. Also since I am meditating on just a few verses, a single verse, or verse phrase, I can also incorporate a few different Bible versions, which might also add to the insights I will draw from the text.

3. Prayer - blessing prayer, devotional prayers, listening prayer, intercession, laments, the prayer of examen, etc.

4. Journaling - jot down revelation (what we sensed God speaking), Bible verses and ensuing reflections and insights, what God has done, etc.

Journaling is a way for you and I to steward what God is speaking, as well as the verses and other related thoughts you received. You put these insights, Bible verses, etc. to writing. These could be sentences, bullet points, or even a little artwork to capture something you saw or sensed. This practice will help you remember/recall every meaningful God-whisper, thought and insight and allows you to refer to it later on. You do not want to forget the key instances of His leadership, guidance, and wisdom that He is releasing to you.

Daily Devotionals Apps/Websites You Can Use

Here are some excellent online sites and smartphone apps that provide a daily devotional (a new/different one for every day of the year) for you to read and meditate on, in order to help you spend daily time with God and in His Word.

MY DISCLAIMER On Using Devotional Books or Apps: Personally, I try to get people I disciple to design their own quiet times themselves by employing the key elements above. Why not instead, let them use a pre-established devotional book or app? Because I am raising up disciples who can make disciples. This means that they need to learn to navigate a daily devotional time and be proactive as to what they employ and why. They need to have experience in helping themselves grow spiritually in a strategic way. This experience will help them gain confidence in helping others do the same.  This key ownership part makes you a disciple that is purposeful in your own spiritual growth and who is now empowered to help others take ownership of their own daily devotionals. That being said,  I do realize that some people would rather use a devotional app or book for their quiet times. I also know that newer believers will tend to benefit from more added Christian input for their spiritual growth, such as the devotional apps above. New believers do have a lot to learn and devotional resources such as these give them more focused material from which to learn from God's Word, at their pace and level of hunger.
