Discipleship • Core Values In A Church • Four Core Values That Help Shape An Effective Disciple Making Plan
People who live with purpose often have a set of core values—written or unwritten—that define what’s most important to them and guide how they live. These values act as a compass, shaping their decisions, relationships, and impact on the world. One such person was Steve Jobs, founder of Apple. His values, such as innovation, simplicity, and excellence, drove his vision and ultimately inspired the world to “Think differently.”
But no one lived with greater purpose than Jesus. He lived the most intentional, impactful life of any human being, seamlessly integrating His values into everything He said and did. Below are personal statements I’ve crafted to reflect what I believe were likely the core values of Jesus. They capture the principles that guided His life and that we as His disciples are called to embrace as well, as we apprentice with Him (as we... Be with Jesus, Become Like Jesus, and Do as Jesus Did).
I live in full obedience to my Father, seeking His will, honoring His timing, and trusting Him in every situation.
John 5:19: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does."
John 5:30: "By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me."
Luke 22:42: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Jesus in Gethsemane)
John 14:31: "I do exactly what my Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father."
Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Hebrews 5:8: "Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered."
John 6:38: "For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me."
I practice a slowed-down faith, resisting a hurried lifestyle to live in the present, sense His perspective, and join in His mission.
Mark 1:35: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."
Luke 5:16: "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
Matthew 11:28-30: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Luke 10:38-42: "'Martha, Martha,' the Lord answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one [sitting at the Lord's feet]. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."'
John 15:4-5: "Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me."
Mark 1:35: "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."
Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Isaiah 30:15: "This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: 'In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.'"
I hide God's Word in my heart to know Him deeply, follow His ways, and align all I do with His truth.
Matthew 4:4: "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
John 17:17: "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."
Psalm 119:11: "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you."
Luke 24:27: "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."
Colossians 3:16-17: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
John 8:31-32: "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'”
2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Joshua 1:8: "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful."
I prioritize time alone with the Father to recharge, receive His vision, and realign with His leadership. As I am filled with His love, I am enabled to care for myself and overflow with love for others.
Luke 6:12: "One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God."
John 17:3: "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent."
Psalm 23:1-3: "The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul."
Luke 5:16: "But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed."
Matthew 14:23: "After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone."
John 15:9-10: "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love."
Isaiah 40:31: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
I walk humbly with the Father, embracing service over personal glory and seeking to lift others up while maintaining healthy boundaries for self-care.
Mark 10:43-45: "Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all."
Philippians 2:6-7: "He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant."
Romans 12:10: "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves."
Matthew 20:25-28: "But Jesus called them together and said, 'You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.'”
Philippians 2:5-7: "In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness."
John 13:14-15: "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."
Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
I speak and live in truth, reflecting God’s character, standing against falsehood, and extending forgiveness and grace freely.

Proverbs 12:22: "The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy."

Luke 23:34: "Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' And they divided up his clothes by casting lots."
I enact God’s justice and mercy by comforting the hurting, restoring the broken, meeting the needs of the vulnerable.
Matthew 23:23: "But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy, and faithfulness."
Isaiah 1:17: "Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed."

Matthew 25:34-36: "Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'"
Micah 6:8: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners."
Luke 4:18-19: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."
Zechariah 7:9-10: "This is what the Lord Almighty said: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.'”
By fixing my thoughts on the Father and His calling, I endure pain, suffering, and shame with purpose, carrying out His work in the joy set before me, for His glory.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18: "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
Romans 8:18: "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us."
John 19:30: "It is finished."
Hebrews 12:2: "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Philippians 3:13-14: "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
James 1:2-4: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
Romans 8:28: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Genesis 50:19-21: "But Joseph said to them, 'Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.' And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them."
Isaiah 53:3-11: "He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people. He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins."
