From Deceitful Desires to Spirit-Led Longings: Living from the New Heart

In Jeremiah 17:9, God diagnoses the human condition: “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick.”
In the old heart, desires are driven by self-love and self-direction. Because the heart seeks to rule itself apart from God, it pursues lesser treasures—temporary things that serve the self rather than honor God. These self-driven desires feel natural but are fundamentally corrupted, leading to idolatry, pride, lust, and disordered loves. Worse, the old heart lies to itself, masking harmful desires as good.
This inner corruption creates a life where:
Good things become idols.
Destructive patterns feel justified.
Self remains the center.
In the promise of the new covenant, God announces a radical inner transformation:
Jeremiah 31:33: “I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts.”
Ezekiel 36:26–27: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you… I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
At conversion, God decisively:
Removes the hardened, unresponsive heart of stone—the spiritual deadness resistant to Him.
Gives a new heart—soft, responsive, and inclined toward His ways.
Places His Spirit within, awakening new, godly desires.
However, while the hardened heart is removed, the patterns and habits of sin (the flesh)—ingrained in the mind, emotions, and body—are not erased instantly. This explains why, even after receiving a new heart, believers continue to struggle against lingering fleshly desires.
Regeneration is decisive: the heart is new, and the Spirit dwells within.
Sanctification is gradual: God transforms the mind, emotions, will, and body over time, displacing old desires and forming new ones.
In this new heart, God births what Jonathan Edwards called "holy affections"—Spirit-born desires that love what God loves and move you toward Christ.
Biblical Case for Desire-Led Living:
Jeremiah 31:33 & Ezekiel 36:26–27 – God internalizes His law, shaping our desires.
Philippians 2:13 – God works in us to will and act according to His purpose. (The NLT puts it this way: "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.")
Psalm 37:4 – As we delight in Him, He reshapes our desires.
Galatians 5:16–25 – Walking by the Spirit means following Spirit-led desires over fleshly ones.
Romans 8:5–6 – A mind set on the Spirit produces life and peace.
2 Corinthians 5:14 – Christ’s love compels us forward into His purposes.
Jonathan Edwards – Jonathan Edwards, a key voice in the First Great Awakening, famously said, “True religion, in great part, consists in holy affections.” For Edwards, genuine faith wasn’t just right thinking or behavior—it was a heart reshaped by the Spirit, producing God-centered desires ("holy affections") that move us toward Christ.
Thus, in the redeemed life, Spirit-formed desires are meant to be the leading center of the heart, guiding decisions and shaping life under God’s leadership.
In the Hebraic view, the heart integrates:
Desires (in the redeemed, new heart this is meant to be the leading center)
Mind
Emotions
Will
God’s design is for Spirit-shaped desires to lead, while:
The mind discerns truth.
The emotions respond and reflect.
The will chooses and acts.
But when these faculties dominate instead of serving desires, they distort life:
Mind-led Life:
Relies on logic and analysis.
Can be paralyzed by overthinking—“analysis paralysis.”
Delays obedience when decisions aren’t logically clear.
Emotion-led Life:
Reacts impulsively or erratically.
Experiences mood-driven starts and stops.
Struggles with noncommittal or unstable progress.
Will-led Life:
Relies on sheer discipline, self-will, or stubbornness, wanting to be its own master.
Resists submission to God and others, often becoming hard-headed, heartless, or contrary to God’s leadership.
Leads to legalism, burnout, pride in self-effort, or outright rebellion.
In contrast, when the mind, emotions, and will work together as a checks-and-balances system under Spirit-shaped desires:
The Mind tests desires through Scripture.
Emotions confirm or caution.
The Will surrenders to God’s timing and commands.
This allows Spirit-born desires to lead with discernment and clarity.
Not every Spirit-born desire is for "now." Some desires:
Are meant for future fulfillment.
Require character formation before realization.
Need waiting on God’s appointed time.
Moving ahead of God can damage His purposes, while delaying unnecessarily can quench the Spirit’s work.
Discerning God’s timing requires:
The mind’s wisdom.
The emotions’ inner peace or unrest.
The will’s surrendered patience.
God’s Word, Spirit, and People as confirming or cautioning voices.
Through discernment—where our desires are tested by our mind, emotions, and will, and guided by God’s Spirit, Word, and People—we learn to recognize our God-given desires and let this process shape WHAT we do, WHEN we do it, HOW we do it, and WHY we do it.
Because internal discernment isn’t infallible, God provides three external means of grace for guidance, alignment, and protection:
1. God’s Word – The Anchor of Truth
Strengthens by revealing promises.
Encourages by showcasing God’s faithfulness.
Comforts in suffering.
Corrects false desires.
Models Christ’s life.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet.” —Psalm 119:105
2. The Holy Spirit – The Living Guide Within
Strengthens with power and grace.
Encourages your identity in Christ.
Comforts with supernatural peace.
Corrects through conviction and re-alignment.
Forms Christ’s character in you.
“Walk by the Spirit.” —Galatians 5:16
3. God’s People – The Body of Christ
Strengthen through community life and mutual gifts.
Encourage through testimony and support.
Comfort through presence and prayer.
Correct lovingly, pointing out blind spots.
Model Christ in practical ways.
“Teach and admonish one another.” —Colossians 3:16
Together, these means of grace form a multi-layered discernment environment that works with your inner checks-and-balances system, ensuring:
Your Spirit-shaped desires are trustworthy.
Flesh-driven impulses are corrected.
You grow in discernment and faithfulness.
Picture a life where:
Spirit-formed desires shape your daily direction.
Mind, emotions, and will serve together as discerning guides.
God’s Word, Spirit, and People provide steady external confirmation.
You recognize God’s timing, not rushing or delaying.
Holy affections—not self-centeredness—drive your decisions.
This is life as God intended:
Rooted in love for Christ.
Empowered by the Spirit.
Guarded by truth.
Strengthened by community.
Responsive to God’s moment-by-moment leadership.
Recognize the deceitfulness of the old heart.
Receive the new heart and Spirit-born desires as your leading center.
Let Spirit-led desires guide, while mind, emotions, and will discern and support.
Nurture godly desires and reject ungodly ones.
Lean on God’s Word, Spirit, and People for external confirmation and correction.
Discern God’s timing, trusting that waiting can be Spirit-led too.
Walk in holy affections, where love for God—not self-rule—guides your life.
To follow Jesus is to treasure Him above all. In Christ, you’ve been given:
A new heart.
The Holy Spirit.
The Word of God.
The Body of Christ.
This is the life God designed: a Spirit-led life where your heart beats in sync with His. “He has told you, O man, what is good: to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” —Micah 6:8
