The Bible Character Study method is a structured approach to studying the lives of individuals in Scripture to learn from their experiences, choices, and relationship with God. This method follows six key steps: State of Affairs > Problem > Challenges > Revelation > Choices > Application. The goal of a Bible character study is not just to learn about historical figures but to discover how their experiences point us to God’s truth and shape our own faith journey. True study leads to transformation and action.
Understand the Background:
What is the moral, spiritual, political, and economic state of the nation or people?
What historical events or cultural factors are shaping this character’s life?
Examine the Character’s Role:
What is this person’s position in society (leader, prophet, disciple, outcast, etc.)?
How does their background affect their actions and decisions?
Identify the Main Struggle:
What overwhelming problem is this person encountering?
How does this issue affect them and those around them?
Consider the External and Internal Struggles:
Is the problem a personal, relational, national, or spiritual issue?
How does this person react to the challenge?
Analyze the Difficulties Faced:
What emotions, frustrations, or fears does this person experience?
What opposition or resistance do they encounter?
Look for Growth or Weakness:
Does this person grow through the challenge, or do they struggle with doubt and failure?
What lessons can be learned from how they handle difficulties, good or bad?
Identify How God Reveals Himself:
Does God speak through a prophet, vision, miracle, direct or indirect communication?
Is this revelation in response to prayer, obedience, or crisis?
Observe the Character’s Response:
Does the person recognize and accept God’s revelation?
How does this revelation impact their decisions moving forward?
Evaluate the Character’s Response:
What led them to make a certain decision or change direction?
Do they take on a new posture that aligns with God’s will?
Compare to a Godly Standard:
Did the character choose a righteous path or a rebellious one?
What would have been the godly choice in this situation?
Personal Reflection:
What is God speaking to me through this person’s life?
What areas in my own life reflect similar struggles or choices?
Obedience and Action:
What practical steps can I take to align with God’s will?
How will I respond to what God is teaching me through this study?
