Prayer Walking
Walking with God, Seeing with Compassion, and Praying with Purpose

Prayer walking is the simple practice of walking through a community while intentionally praying for the people and places around you.
As you walk, you pay attention to what you see, pray for real needs, and remain attentive to the Holy Spirit. Prayer walking helps us see a community through the compassion of Jesus, intercede for what matters to Him, and become available to participate in His loving work. “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10
Prayer walking is not about criticizing a community or trying to control what happens there. It is about blessing people, seeking God’s purposes, and joining the work He is already doing.
Prayer walking helps us:
Pray specifically for real people and places
Grow in compassion for a community
Recognize opportunities to love, serve, or share Jesus
Over time, neighborhoods can be intentionally covered in prayer, street by street. Prayer walking also changes us. As we pray, God forms us into more attentive and available participants in His mission.
Walk Slowly — Move through the area without rushing. Remember that you are walking with God among people He deeply loves.
Notice Carefully — Pay attention to the people, homes, schools, and businesses around you. Notice both visible needs and signs of God’s goodness already present.
Pray Simply — Speak naturally with God about what you see, hear, and already know. Use the Five H’s to guide your prayers when you are unsure what to pray.
You do not need special words or extraordinary spiritual experiences. Begin with what is in front of you.
Listen Humbly — Remain attentive to anything the Holy Spirit may bring to mind. Hold every impression with humility and test it through Scripture, love, and wisdom.
Do not assume that every thought is a message from God.
Respond Lovingly — Be open to natural opportunities to greet someone, offer prayer, begin a conversation, or meet a practical need.
Prayer walking is not only about praying for a community. It is also about becoming available to participate in God’s loving work.
The Five H’s answer the question: What should I pray while I walk? These themes are starting points, not a checklist. You do not need to pray through every suggestion during every walk. Follow what you notice and return to the other areas over time.
1. Heavens — Pray for God’s blessing, presence, and power to be revealed.
Pray for:
Physical healing and emotional restoration
Financial provision and meaningful employment
Peace in relationships and freedom from oppression
Ask God to make His goodness known so that people recognize His loving care.
Prayer starter: “Father, let Your goodness and power be revealed in this community. Bring healing, provision, and peace to the people who live here.”
2. Hearts — Pray for people to become spiritually open and responsive to God.
Pray for:
People to recognize their need for Jesus
Hearts to be softened toward God
Lies and spiritual blindness to be replaced by truth
Ask the Holy Spirit to help people understand the gospel and respond with faith.
Prayer starter: “Jesus, prepare hearts to receive You. Remove confusion and reveal the truth of who You are.”
3. Homes — Pray for households to experience the peace and transforming grace of Jesus.
Pray for:
Marriages and family relationships to be strengthened
Entire households to come to faith
Homes to become places of peace and hospitality
Ask God to reveal people of peace who are open to Him and connected with others in the community.
Prayer starter: “God, bring Your peace into these homes. Strengthen families and draw entire households into life with Jesus.”
4. Highways — Pray for open pathways through which the gospel can move.
Pray for:
Obstacles and misunderstandings to be removed
Natural opportunities for spiritual conversations
Open doors within schools, workplaces, and community relationships
Ask God to create relational pathways through which His truth and love can spread.
Prayer starter: “Lord, open pathways for the good news of Jesus. Remove barriers and create opportunities for meaningful conversations.”
5. Hands — Pray for believers to participate in God’s mission.
Pray for:
More believers to pray for and serve the community
Unity among nearby churches and Christians
Courage to demonstrate and share the love of Jesus
Ask God to send laborers who will faithfully love the people of the community. “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” — Luke 10:2
Prayer starter: “Lord of the harvest, send workers into this community. Help Your people serve with compassion and represent Jesus faithfully.”
Compassion Rather Than Criticism — Do not walk through a community looking for everything that is wrong. See people as loved by God and worthy of dignity.
Humility Rather Than Assumption — Pray about what you notice without pretending to understand everything happening in someone’s life.
Faith Rather Than Pressure — Trust that God is working even when you do not see immediate results. Prayer does not force outcomes. It entrusts people and places to God.
Take a few moments to prepare your heart:
Surrender yourself and your plans to God
Ask for compassion and spiritual attentiveness
Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your prayers
You may also read a short passage of Scripture, such as Matthew 6:9–10, Luke 10:1–9, or 1 Timothy 2:1–4.
Prayer walking can be done alone, with a partner, or in a small group. Walking with one or two others can help you remain focused and pray in agreement.
Keep the practice simple:
Pray quietly or conversationally
Reinforce one another’s prayers before changing topics
Allow moments of silence as you listen and observe
Be friendly and respectful. Do not force conversations or make people feel watched. When an opportunity arises naturally, you may introduce yourself and offer to pray for a specific need.
Stay aware of your surroundings and respect private property. Choose safe routes, especially when walking after dark or in an unfamiliar area.
Prepare (5 Minutes) — Pray together, invite the Holy Spirit to lead, and choose the area you will walk.
Walk and Pray (20 Minutes) — Use the simple rhythm and the Five H’s. Follow what you notice without feeling pressure to cover every theme.
Reflect ( 5 Minutes)
When you finish, ask:
What did we notice?
What prayers stood out?
How might God be inviting us to respond?
Prayer walking should not end when the walk is finished. God may invite you to:
Return and continue praying
Build relationships within the community
Serve a need or begin a spiritual conversation
Record any meaningful observations without making assumptions about people. Continue praying for the area and celebrate signs of God’s goodness.
Over time, prayer walking can become part of an ongoing rhythm of prayer, presence, and mission.
You do not need to be a prayer expert. You only need a willing heart and a desire to walk with God among people He loves.
