Trauma-Informed Care • The 5 N's Of Trauma-Informed Care • SPICCESS Model • Humanitarian Crisis Sharing
This trauma-informed tool is designed for engaging with anyone who has recently experienced a humanitarian crisis, including evacuees at evacuation centers. It emphasizes active listening, compassion, and creating a sense of safety and empowerment. This approach addresses both emotional and practical needs while respecting each person's autonomy and unique circumstances.
Introduce Yourself Calmly: “Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m here to support you during this time. How are you holding up?”
Be Attentive to Body Language: Sit at their level, maintain a calm and open posture, and avoid rushing the conversation.
Validate Their Feelings: “I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed.”
Avoid Judgment or Comparisons: Steer clear of statements like, “At least…” or, “It could have been worse.”
Ask Open-Ended Questions: “What’s one thing you need right now that I can help you with?”
Provide Specific Information on Available Resources: shelter details, food sources, clothing supplies, counseling services, etc. Example: “We have extra blankets and warm meals over there. Would you like me to show you?”
Offer Options, Not Directives: “Would you like to rest, or talk more? Either way is fine.”
Respect Their Autonomy: Let them decide the pace of the conversation and the type of help they need.
Key Phrases to Use
For Comfort:
“You’re safe here, and we’re here for you.”
For Practical Help:

Offer Continued Support: “I’ll check back with you in a little while to see if you need anything else.”
Provide a Resource Card: Include contact numbers, websites, or local services they can use when ready.
