Foundational Understandings
What is a blessing?
A blessing is a spoken or written expression of goodwill and divine favor, often invoking God's protection, presence, and provision to encourage, support and uplift someone in their life's journey.
What happens when we bless someone?
By drawing on the wisdom of Scripture, the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and an understanding of their struggles and needs, you can speak a blessing that brings comfort, encouragement, and support. This blessing helps them see a hopeful future and walk confidently in God’s love, favor, and care.
Blessing someone is fundamentally about treating them as you would want to be treated, as emphasized in the Golden Rule. This means understanding their struggles, pains, challenges, and frustrations so you can offer meaningful support, strength, and comfort. When you bless someone, you're actively partnering with God in His desire to bless others, aligning your actions with His will. A genuine blessing is grounded in God’s Word; it’s essential to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and ensure that everything spoken is supported by Scripture. Ask yourself how your blessing can reinforce the person’s security in God’s love and yours. Effective blessings are informed by Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and shaped by the Biblical promise of abundant life. They help individuals envision a positive future, fostering hope and affirming God’s undeserved favor in their lives. A blessing prayer is an act of faith directed towards a loving and trustworthy God, expressing confidence in His goodness and benevolence. The most impactful blessings arise from insights and revelations given by God; by listening to His voice, we can formulate powerful and confident blessings that speak into people’s lives. Such blessings draw from our natural senses, spiritual discernment, and biblical wisdom. Whether using one or all three approaches, the goal is to craft blessings that resonate deeply and bring God’s presence into the recipient’s life.
Protection - Invoke God’s protection to defend and safeguard the person from physical, emotional, mental, relational and/or spiritual harm that may try to come, or has already come, from the enemy (Satan and his minions), and/or the harshness, brokenness and wickedness of this world.
Presence - The blessings that Jesus Christ brings with His presence are abundant and diverse. When Jesus is present, all aspects of who He is can become available to the person being blessed. As "the Prince of Peace," for example, Jesus can bring peace to those we bless. Consider what aspect of Jesus' perfect character is most needed by the person you are blessing, and use that specific attribute in your blessing. Additionally, when blessing others, it is beneficial to pray for believers to continually sense God's presence, guiding and comforting them in every aspect of their lives. For unbelievers, pray that God reveals Himself in real and tangible ways so they may come to know Him.
Provision - Ask God to meet the needs of the person by providing for their physical, financial, emotional, mental, relational and/or spiritual needs.
🙏 Dear Heavenly Father, I lift up Michael to You and ask for Your divine protection over him. Please shelter him on the streets from any physical harm or any other evil that may want to come against his mind and heart. Keep him safe and at peace.
I pray that Your presence becomes abundantly evident in his life. Fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Reveal Yourself to him in real and tangible ways so he may come to know You and the fullness of Your love and grace.
Father, I also ask for Your provision to meet all of his needs—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Provide for his financial needs through work opportunities where he can help and bless others, and guide him on the path You have set before him. May he experience Your goodness and faithfulness continually in every aspect of his life. Amen. 🙏
ROLES - Identify the various roles they play in life and speak blessing into them. - Acknowledge and bless the various roles individuals play in their lives, such as husband, father, and/or businessman. When you bless the roles a person fulfills, you extend blessings to all those influenced by those roles.
"As a husband I bless you with a greater and deeper love and appreciation for your wife. May she feel the genuineness of your care for her and may she notice all your efforts and choices that you make to be a blessing to her."
"I bless your relationship with your children, praying that the Lord strengthens the bonds of love and care among you, and that you may all experience many joyful moments together that deepen your connection."
STRUGGLES & NEEDS - Find out where there's a struggle or need and speak blessing into it. - Identify areas of struggle, whether physical, mental, relational, emotional or spiritual and speak blessings accordingly.
"I bless your digestive system with health and well-being..."
"I bless you to experience the purity of a family feel in a community that richly cares for each other and supports one another. May you feel joy every time you partake of this spiritual family."
SPIRITUAL MATURITY - Use God's Word to guide blessings aimed at spiritual growth and maturity. - Allow God's Word to inform the desired spiritual maturity and the godly outcome they need for His abundant life to thrive in them. Address negative qualities by praying for positive transformation (by praying the opposite of what's negative).
"Lord, fill Carlos with peace and contentment in You and give him a sound mind to think and see things as You see things."
“I bless you Michael to embrace long-suffering patience in relationships and in waiting on God for His divine timing.”
“I bless you Carol with a deep sense of God's calling and identity. May you experience a confident hope and a joy-filled sense of living in God's purpose for your life.”
“ Sammie, I bless you with restored relationships in your family. May each family member experience His healing, grace and help to love other family members well and to walk in a manner worthy of Christ.”
"I bless your work environment with the peace of God to saturate every room and influence every person and every interaction that happens there."
"I bless you to see the goodness, experience the generosity, and feel the warmness of the love of God over your life."
When crafting blessing prayers, it's essential to draw from various sources of insight and guidance. Here’s how you can use your natural senses, discernment, divine revelation, and biblical knowledge to create effective prayers.
1. Your Natural Senses
Our natural senses are God-given tools that help us observe and understand the world around us. These observations can provide valuable insights when forming prayers for others.
Using Your Natural Senses:
Observation: Pay attention to the person's circumstances and behavior. What do you see or hear that indicates their needs or struggles? For example, if you notice someone is visibly stressed or anxious, you can pray for peace and calm.
Empathy: Use your ability to feel and understand the emotions of others. How do you sense their emotional state? Empathy allows you to connect with their feelings and pray more effectively for their emotional and mental well-being.
Listening: Be attentive to what the person says. Are they sharing specific worries, frustrations or needs? Listening carefully can provide direct information on how to pray for them.
Example: If you see someone shivering in the cold, you can pray for provision of proper clothing, covering and shelter.
2. Discernment (Natural & Spiritual)
Discernment involves understanding and perceiving the underlying needs and situations beyond the obvious. It can be both a natural ability and a spiritual gift.
Using Natural Discernment:
Experience: Draw from your own life experiences and understanding of human nature. What have you learned that might help you understand this person's situation better?
Insight: Use your intuition to sense deeper issues that may not be immediately apparent. This might involve understanding the dynamics of their relationships or recognizing patterns in their behavior.
Using Spiritual Discernment:
Holy Spirit Guidance: Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal hidden needs or spiritual battles the person might be facing. Spiritual discernment can uncover areas that need prayer which are not visible to the natural eye.
Prayerful Reflection: Spend time in prayer asking God for insight into how to pray specifically for the person’s needs.
Example: You might sense that someone who appears to be angry is actually struggling with deep hurt and unforgiveness. You can then pray for healing and emotional restoration.
3. Divine Revelation
Divine revelation is when God directly reveals information to you about a person’s needs, the situation at hand or what God is doing about it. This can guide you in praying more specifically and effectively.
Receiving Divine Revelation:
Listening Prayer: Spend time in quiet prayer, asking God to reveal specific things to pray for. Be open to hearing His voice through impressions, Bible verses, pictures or visions and more.
Promptings: Pay attention to any strong inner promptings or sudden thoughts that come while you are praying. These could be God revealing specific areas of need or direction.
Confirmation: Seek confirmation through additional prayer or by sharing with the person who can either confirm or negate what you are sensing.
Example: During prayer, you might feel a strong urge to pray for someone's financial breakthrough, even if they haven't mentioned it. Trusting this prompting, you can choose to pray for God’s provision in their finances, with confidence that God is acting on their behalf to bless them in this area.
4. Biblical Knowledge & Wisdom
Scripture is a rich source of wisdom and guidance for our prayers. Using the Bible ensures our blessings align with God's promises, principles, and His thoughts and affections (mind and heart).
Using Biblical Knowledge and Wisdom:
Scripture Verses & Passages: Find and use Bible verses and passages or stories that relate to the person's situation. Scripture is powerful and provides a foundation for our prayers.
Biblical Principles: Apply biblical teachings to the person's needs. For example, praying for someone’s provision can be grounded in the biblical principle that God is our provider.
God’s Promises: Claim God’s promises in your prayers. Remind God of His promises to provide, protect, and guide His people.
By integrating your natural senses, discernment, divine revelation, and biblical knowledge, you can craft blessing prayers that are specific, powerful, and aligned with God's will. This comprehensive approach ensures that your prayers are both heartfelt and effective, meeting the needs of those you pray for in a profound and meaningful and god-honoring way.
