As we do outreach (and discipleship)

As we engage in outreach and discipleship, we minister in love, speak God’s truth, and release tangible demonstrations of the power and presence of God as the Holy Spirit leads. The goal is not merely to have spiritual conversations, but to help people encounter God in ways that lead them into deeper trust, surrender, and submission to the leadership of Jesus over their lives. 

These encounters can be understood in four key ways: love encounters, truth encounters, power encounters, and allegiance encounters. Each one addresses a different part of the human person and a different dimension of God’s work in people’s lives. 

1. Love Encounters

Human beings were created for connection. We have a deep need to be seen, known, and valued. We also need to be respected and treated with dignity. This need is not only relational; it is spiritual. At the core of every human heart is a God-shaped longing to know that we are loved by the One who made us.

Love encounters reveal the love of God in ways people can feel, receive, and understand. They become a tangible expression of God’s compassion. They do this through ordinary acts of kindness, mercy, and generosity. They also do this through listening, service, honor, and care.

Love encounters are a powerful antidote to broken hearts. They communicate that God is not distant, indifferent, or harsh. He is near, compassionate, and full of mercy. They also show that the love of God can flow freely through humble servants who are willing to reach out to others in His name.

Through love encounters, people experience both the love of God’s people and, through them, the love of God Himself.

• "By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." - 1 John 3:16-18

• "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

• "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins." - 1 Peter 4:8

2. Truth Encounters

If God is love and He is making Himself known, then people must come to understand who He is and what He desires. They must also come to understand what He has done and what He offers through Jesus Christ.

Truth encounters engage the mind, awaken the conscience, and challenge the will. They bring people into contact with the reality of God and the message of the gospel. They also bring people into contact with the authority of Scripture and the truth of the Christian worldview.

A truth encounter may involve sharing the gospel, explaining Scripture, or answering questions. It may also involve correcting misunderstandings or exposing deception. Ultimately, it helps someone see life through God’s perspective. These encounters counter ignorance, confusion, and error so that people can come to a clearer understanding of Jesus Christ and respond to Him rightly.

Truth encounters are not merely about winning arguments or transferring information. They are about helping people see reality as God reveals it, so they can come into deeper relationship with Him and walk in the freedom His truth brings.

• "So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, 'If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'" - John 8:31-32

• "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth." - John 17:17-19

• "so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes." - Ephesians 4:14

• "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:14-17

3. Power Encounters

Scripture teaches that we have a real enemy who works to blind minds and distort truth. He also works to oppress lives and hold people in bondage. Through sin, deception, and trauma, people can come under patterns of captivity. Rebellion, fear, and false worship can also open doors to bondage. These patterns may become so deep that people cannot simply reason or will themselves out of them.

Power encounters reveal that Jesus is not only truthful and loving, but victorious and powerful.They demonstrate the authority of Christ over sickness, bondage, and fear. They also reveal His victory over demonic oppression, torment, and the works of darkness.

These encounters may happen through healing, signs and wonders, and prophetic ministry. They may also happen through inner healing, deliverance, or other Spirit-led demonstrations of God’s power. Their purpose is not spectacle, performance, or spiritual entertainment. Their purpose is to reveal the supremacy of Jesus, bring freedom to captives, and bear witness to the reality of the kingdom of God.

Power encounters often open people’s hearts to deeper faith. When people experience or witness the power of God, they are confronted with the reality that Jesus is alive, active, compassionate, and Lord. These moments can prepare the way for repentance, renewed faith, and deeper allegiance to Christ.

• "...the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." - 2 Corinthians 4:4

• "...The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." - 1 John 3:8 

• "Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in that city." - Acts 8:4-8

4. Allegiance Encounters

It is not enough for people to hear truth, admire truth, or even agree with truth. They must respond to it. A person may have access to life-saving medicine, but if they refuse to take it, the medicine will not save them. In the same way, people may hear the truth of God, witness His love, and even experience His power, yet still resist the call to surrender.

Allegiance encounters call people to respond to Jesus with faith and repentance. They also call people to obedience and wholehearted commitment. They address the will. They confront the question: Who will you serve? Who will you trust? Who will have the final authority over your life?

In evangelism, allegiance encounters call those who do not yet know Christ to turn from sin and trust in the gospel. They also call them to receive Jesus as Savior and submit to Him as Lord. This includes sharing testimony and presenting the gospel clearly. It also includes calling people to repentance and inviting them into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In discipleship, allegiance encounters call believers to deeper surrender. Many Christians believe in Jesus, attend church, and pray occasionally. They may do good things, yet still resist bringing every area of life under His leadership. They may affirm Scripture but not submit to its authority. They may claim Christ but still live with divided loyalties.

Allegiance encounters lovingly challenge competing loyalties such as false beliefs, cultural assumptions, and worldly desires. They also confront religious systems, personal idols, and self-rule. In this way, they expose any mindset that resists the rule of God. They call people away from double-mindedness and into undivided devotion to Jesus and His kingdom.

This kind of surrender is both decisive and ongoing. There are moments when people must make clear commitments to follow Christ. Yet deep transformation also happens over time and in relationship. It grows through accountability, encouragement, and correction. It is strengthened through obedience and continued submission to God’s leadership.

This is why discipleship must happen in community. We need brothers and sisters who know us, love us, and desire God’s best for us. We also need people who are willing to call us into deeper obedience. Allegiance encounters help people move from merely hearing the Word to obeying it. They call people from partial surrender into wholehearted devotion. They also lead people from divided loyalty into faithful allegiance to Jesus Christ.

• "Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:14-15
