It provides us with insights into God's character, His plans for humanity, and His desires for our lives. It is a powerful and transformative book that guides us in our journey of faith and discipleship.
Six Bible Highlights And Their Role In Our Lives:
Teaches us about God: The Bible serves as a source of knowledge and understanding about God. It reveals His character, His ways, and His relationship with humanity. Through the Bible, we learn about God's love, His attributes, and His plan for salvation.
Teaches us about ourselves and the world: The Bible not only teaches us about God but also provides insights into our own nature and the world we live in. It sheds light on the human condition and our need for redemption. It exposes the reality of sin and its consequences, but it also reveals God's plan for salvation through Jesus Christ. By understanding the message of the Bible, we can recognize our own brokenness and need for forgiveness and restoration. It also helps us understand our identity, our purpose, and our role in the world.
Enables us to live godly lives: The Bible provides guidance and principles for living a godly life. It addresses our struggles, fears, and doubts, offering guidance and encouragement. The Bible provides wisdom and principles that can help us navigate various aspects of life, including relationships, work, and decision-making. It offers instructions on how to love and serve God, how to relate to others, and how to make wise choices. By studying and applying the teachings of the Bible, we can align our lives with God's will and live in a way that pleases Him.
Facilitates our personal relationship with God: The Bible is not just a book of rules and teachings; it is a means of communication between God and humanity. Through the words of the Bible, we can encounter God, hear His voice, and develop a personal relationship with Him. It is through the Bible that God reveals Himself to us and invites us into a deeper connection with Him. Ultimately, the Bible serves as a source of illumination, shining its light into the depths of our hearts and minds. It reveals our true nature, exposes areas of sin and rebellion as well as of growth and transformation, and offers hope and healing. Through the Bible, we can develop a personal relationship with God and experience His transformative power in our lives.
Revelation for Daily Living: As we grow in knowing God's voice through Scripture, we become more and more sensitive to it. The truth is the principles and wisdom of the Bible can only take us so far in some specific situations. It may not be clear what job to take or what decision to make certain contexts. But as we become more and more familiar with His voice we can begin to recognize His nudgings, His still small voice and the even more direct and obvious ways in which God speaks to us giving us steps to take as direction and guidance. This a right and a privilege of the children of God: to hear His voice and be led by the Great Shepherd.
Exalts Jesus and helps us join in that exaltation: The Bible exalts Jesus Christ as the central figure of human history. It reveals His life, teachings, death, and resurrection, highlighting His role as the Savior and the source of eternal life. It shows us that He is the ultimate expression of God's love and redemption. In fact, it tells us that He is the exact representation of the Father. If we have seen Jesus then we have seen the Father—who He is, how He thinks, feels, and acts. The Bible calls us to exalt Jesus in our everyday lives by following His example, living in obedience to Him, proclaiming His message, and joining in His mission here on earth as His hands and feet.
Prepares us for God-given mission: The Bible equips and prepares us for the mission that God has entrusted to us. It reveals God's purposes for humanity, including the call to share the good news of salvation with others. By studying the Bible, we gain a deeper understanding of God's mission and our role in it. It shapes our hopes, dreams, and actions, guiding us to participate in God's work of redeeming humanity and restoring creation.
“The Bible refreshes the soul, makes us wise, gives joy to the heart, enlightens our eyes, warns us against error, exposes our thoughts and liberates us from sin... This word is God's Word.” - Tim Chester

“…when I read the Bible, I’m not looking for something new, nor trying to answer some niggling question [(although these are other purposes for which I do read the Bible)] . Often I’m reading simply so that God’s word can flow into my life and quietly, even unconsciously, shape me, transform me, my values, my dreams, my hopes, my relationships, and my behavior. I want to be a creature of the Word, a person soaked in and shaped by God’s Word, cultivated and curated by its wisdom, warnings, promises, and vision for human existence.” - Michael F. Bird

“The Scriptures are our only reliable source of knowledge about who God is; what He is like; what His will is; what His plans and purposes are; what He has done in the past; what He will do in the future; who we are; what life is all about; how we can know, love, and serve Him; what are the many promises He gives us; and how we can fulfill His purposes in the world. Accordingly, they are also God’s chief instrument for building our faith in Him. The Scriptures are God’s ultimate and final authority for what we are to believe and how we are to behave; they are our lifeline in this fallen world.” - Thomas A. Tarrants

“I have never met a mature, fruitful, strong, spiritually discerning Christian who is not full of Scripture, devoted to regular meditation on Scripture, and given to storing it in the heart through Bible memorization—and that’s not a coincidence. Indeed, it is absolutely essential, after coming to faith in Christ, to be radically, deeply, experientially devoted—unshakably, unwaveringly persuaded—that reading and meditating on and understanding and memorizing and enjoying the Scriptures is absolutely essential for the Christian life.” - John Piper

“God revealed Scripture not just to inform us, but also to form us. It’s effective in teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training disciples in righteousness. Not only that, but Scripture is living and active and is designed to get into our thoughts and through our emotions so that it reaches our innermost parts. As it does so, it acts as a judge of our heart.” - Justin Gravitt

“The Bible is the world’s most significant story, the story of God’s cosmos-restoring work of redemption. The Bible is a “big picture” book. It introduces us to God, defines our identity, lays out the meaning and purpose of life, and shows us where to find help for the one disease that infects us all—sin. If you try to reduce the Bible to a set of directions, not only will you miss its overall wisdom, you will not make sense of the directions. They only make sense in the context of the whole story.
The Bible invites us to fly above the streets of everyday life to get this panoramic view. It invites us to see how, in God’s plan, everything connects to everything else, and how God’s grace enables us to move from where we are to where He wants us to be. It wants to show us the profound realities we would never understand if we stayed at “street level.” And the Bible invites us into relationship with the One who is the ultimate guide. Jesus sees everything from origin to destiny and leads us where we need to go. The Bible imparts to us a wisdom so complete and practical that it can keep us from getting lost again.
…The Bible unfolds life as God sees it, inviting us to know God, to know ourselves, to know life, and to know how God works to undo the damage sin has done to each of us. The Bible is the ultimate spiritual compass, able to tell us exactly where we are and where we need to go.” - from book: "How People Change," by Timothy S. Lane and Paul David Tripp
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
"Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." - Psalm 119:105 NLT
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" - Matthew 4:4 NIV
"The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.
By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression." - Psalm 19:7-13 NIV
"For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable." - Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT
"And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe." - 1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." - Colossians 3:16 ESV
