At NASA, scientists use specialized telescopes equipped with different lenses to observe the sun—not just to capture its brilliance, but to study its complexity. By filtering sunlight into specific wavelengths—each represented by distinct colors—they’re able to see hidden layers: surface activity, magnetic fields, solar flares, and the movement of plasma. Every lens reveals something unique, offering a different glimpse into the same reality.
In much the same way, how we read Scripture depends on the lens we intentionally apply. Certain patterns and structures in the biblical narrative become visible only when viewed through the right framework. A carefully chosen lens can help us see not just isolated verses, but the deeper rhythms of spiritual formation God has woven throughout His Word.
On the Practicing the Way webpage, I present this discipleship guide as a biblically grounded pathway for spiritual formation. In this particular section, I use a fresh lens to look more closely at how the Practicing the Way model resonates with broader biblical language—revealing a recognizable pattern of discipleship found from Genesis to Revelation.
While many of these passages don’t use that exact wording, they trace the same spiritual progression—a rhythm of intimacy, transformation, and mission. Interestingly, the variations in how Scripture expresses this pattern can themselves become new lenses. Phrases like “walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), “dwell in the house of the Lord” (Psalm 27:4), or “put on the new self” (Ephesians 4:24) all describe different aspects of the same journey. Each expression invites us to mine fresh insights—spiritual treasures we might otherwise overlook. Shifting the lens, even slightly, can illuminate new layers of God’s invitation.
My aim here is to explore how this framework not only reflects Jesus’ pattern of discipleship but is also deeply rooted in the larger story of Scripture. What emerges is not just a practical tool for formation, but a rediscovery of the timeless biblical call: To walk with God, be shaped by Him, and join Him in His redemptive work.
