“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.” - Psalm 37:5 (ESV)
Psalm 37:5 offers a beautiful, Spirit-breathed summary of the life of a disciple. It captures the posture of an apprentice of Jesus in just a few words. When we hold this verse up as a Biblical lens, it aligns perfectly with the Practicing the Way model of discipleship and gives us a three-fold rhythm:
This is the call to Behold, Abide, and Rest in Jesus. To commit your way is not merely to add God into your schedule—it’s to surrender your path, your pace, and your purpose to the Lord. It means giving Jesus your attention, allegiance, and affection.
Beholding Jesus aligns your vision to His.
Abiding in Him roots you in a daily, relational dependence.
Resting in Him quiets your striving and teaches you trust.
This is the starting posture of a true apprentice: “My way is now yours, Lord.”
This is where we actively partner with God in formation—through renewing the mind, transforming the heart, and training the body. Trust isn’t passive. It looks like aligning our thoughts with His truth, opening our hearts to His refining love, and shaping our habits around the way of Christ.
Renew the mind → “God, Your Word is more trustworthy than my feelings.”
Transform the heart → “You can heal and reshape even what’s buried deep.”
Train the body → “I’ll show up, even when it’s hard, because I trust You’ll meet me there.”
Becoming like Jesus requires trust—not just in who He is, but in what He’s doing in you, even when you can’t see it yet.
This is the outflow—the movement of love and power through your life, as you step into the mission of Jesus with an embodied faith.
Make Space for the Gospel through hospitality: He acts through your open table and open heart.
Proclaim the Gospel with clarity and boldness: He acts when you speak truth in love.
Demonstrate the Gospel through healing, justice, and compassion: He acts when you put your hands to the work of mercy.
The promise is clear: when you commit your way and trust Him, God doesn’t leave you empty-handed—He moves. Through you. For others.
"Commit your way" > Be with Jesus: Behold, Abide, Rest
"Trust in Him" > Become like Jesus: Renew the Mind, Transform the Heart, Train the Body
"He will act" > Do as Jesus Did: Make Space, Proclaim, Demonstrate
Psalm 37:5 isn’t just a promise—it’s a pattern for formation. A surrendered path, a trusting posture, and Spirit-empowered action. This is the way of Jesus. And this is the way we practice.
