The New Humanity in Jesus Christ
Understanding God's Design, God's Model, God's Pathway, and God's Mission

What did God intend when He created human beings in His image? And what is He accomplishing through the life, death, resurrection, and reign of Jesus Christ? The answer is far greater than the forgiveness of sins or preparation for heaven. From Genesis to Revelation, God is carrying out one magnificent purpose: restoring humanity to what He intended from the beginning.
Sin has distorted what it means to be human. It has disordered our loves and clouded our perception. It has corrupted our character and fractured our relationships. And it has turned us away from God's loving reign. We still bear God's image, but we no longer reflect Him as we were created to do.
Then Jesus entered the human story. He did not merely bring a message about restored humanity. He embodied it. In Him, we see human life as it was always meant to be—fully surrendered to the Father, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and devoted to God’s purposes. His entire life was governed by love.
Yet Jesus came to do more than provide an example to admire. He came to restore humanity itself. He calls us to follow Him, welcomes us into His life, and progressively transforms us into His likeness. Through Him, God is forming a restored people who live under His loving reign, reflect His character, and participate in His work of restoring the world. This is the new humanity. And in Jesus Christ, four great realities beautifully converge.
Jesus perfectly reveals and fulfills God's design for how human beings are formed into His likeness. God designed people to be formed through relationship and loving instruction. They grow through imitation and meaningful responsibility. They are shaped through real-life practice and continual dependence upon Him. Jesus' way of making disciples perfectly fits the way God designed human beings to be formed. His method is not merely one effective approach. It is the fitting approach because it corresponds to God's design for human formation.
Jesus perfectly embodies the new humanity God intended from the beginning. He is not merely our greatest example. He is the image of the invisible God, the perfect human being, and the true revelation of life under the Father's reign.
In Jesus we see humanity as it was always meant to be. He perfectly reveals what it looks like to love God wholeheartedly and love others sacrificially. He shows us how to walk in wisdom and live in complete dependence upon the Father. And He faithfully carries out God's purposes. He does not merely teach the truth. He embodies it.
Jesus perfectly demonstrates the pathway by which this new humanity is formed. He does not simply announce the destination. He apprentices people into it. He calls ordinary men and women to walk with Him and learn from Him. They imitate Him and practice His way of life. They receive loving correction and depend upon the Holy Spirit. And over time, they increasingly become like Him.
Discipleship is therefore far more than the transfer of biblical information. It is the lifelong formation of a new humanity. Through apprenticeship to Jesus, God progressively restores our perception and renews our minds. He reshapes our loves and transforms our character. And He forms us into the likeness of Christ.
Jesus is the reigning King through whom God restores His image in humanity, advances His kingdom, and ultimately restores all things. His mission did not end at the cross. Nor did it end at the resurrection. Nor does it end when individuals are saved. The risen Christ continues His work by forming a people who increasingly share His character, embody His kingdom, and faithfully carry forward His mission in the world. As His likeness is formed within us, we become participants in His ongoing work of reconciliation, renewal, and restoration until the day He makes all things new.
The new humanity is humanity restored in Christ—a people increasingly conformed to His likeness who live under His loving reign, once again image God by reflecting His character and ways, and participate in His mission of restoring all things.
This is why discipleship matters so deeply. God is not merely producing informed believers. He is restoring human beings. He is forming women and men who increasingly think like Christ and love like Christ. They learn to discern like Christ and live like Christ. As they do, they become living demonstrations of what humanity was always meant to be.
This vision changes how we understand the Christian life. Discipleship is not primarily about accumulating biblical knowledge, improving moral behavior, or becoming more involved in ministry. Those are important, but they are not the ultimate goal.
God's purpose is to conform us to the image of His Son. As we become like Jesus, we increasingly fulfill the purpose for which humanity was created. We image God by reflecting His character and ways. We live under the loving reign of King Jesus. We wisely represent His kingdom in every sphere of life. And we participate with Him in His mission of restoring all things.
This is why Jesus is not merely the starting point of the Christian life:
He is its governing center.
He is God's perfect expression of how human beings are formed.
He is God's perfect model of restored humanity.
He is God's perfect pathway by which that humanity is formed.
He is the reigning King through whom God's mission of restoration is accomplished.
Everything ultimately converges in Him.
The invitation of the gospel is not simply to receive forgiveness, although forgiveness is gloriously included. It is not merely to prepare for heaven, although eternal life is promised. The invitation is to entrust ourselves to Jesus Christ — to come under His loving reign, enter His apprenticeship, and become part of the new humanity He is forming.
This is God's great work in history:
A people restored to His image.
A people conformed to the likeness of Christ.
A people who faithfully represent His kingdom.
A people through whom the risen King continues His life and mission until the day when every knee bows before Him, every tongue confesses that He is Lord, and all things are made new.
In Jesus Christ, God's design for humanity and God's model of humanity come together. His pathway of discipleship and His mission of restoration also converge in Him. Everything begins in Him. Everything is held together in Him. And everything God intends for humanity and creation will ultimately find its fulfillment in Him.
