Jesus had not eaten for forty days. He was hungry. Then Satan came to Him and said, “...If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Matthew 4:3 NIV).  At first, the temptation appears to be about food. But Jesus was not merely being tempted to eat. He was being tempted to satisfy a legitimate need outside the Father’s timing, path, and pace.  There was nothing wrong with bread. The temptation was to take control. Jesus had the power to provide for Himself immediately. Yet He refused to use the power of God independently of the will of God. He would not rush ahead of His Father, even to meet a real need.

The other temptations offered similar shortcuts. Jesus could prove His identity through a public spectacle rather than faithful obedience. He could receive the kingdoms of the world without rejection, suffering, and the cross. He could accelerate the outcome by abandoning the Father’s process. Jesus refused. He would not merely reach the right destination. He would arrive by the Father’s path. He chose trust over control and obedience over immediate results. He chose to walk every step with His Father.

This is the heart of slowed-down spirituality.

The Pace of Jesus

Slowed-down spirituality is not about moving slowly for its own sake. God is not slow because He lacks power. He spoke creation into existence. Jesus healed with a word. The Spirit came suddenly at Pentecost. The goal is not slowness. The goal is surrender. Slowed-down spirituality means walking at the pace of Jesus — not ahead of Him, far behind Him, or off pursuing another agenda. We remain close enough to notice where He is leading. We listen for His direction and adjust our pace to His.

The Christian life is wonderfully simple because Jesus leads and we follow. We do not have to control every outcome or understand the entire journey. We do not have to carry responsibilities that belong only to God. Simple does not mean easy. It means uncluttered. Our central responsibility is not to manage everything. It is to remain with the One who leads us.

Jesus Was Never Hurried

Jesus lived among constant demands. Crowds searched for Him. Sick people needed Him. His disciples frequently misunderstood Him. Yet Jesus was never hurried. After healing many people in Capernaum, He rose early and went to a solitary place to pray. When the disciples found Him, they said, “...Everyone is looking for You” (Mark 1:37 NIV).  From their perspective, the next step was obvious. The crowds were gathering and the ministry was gaining momentum. 

But Jesus did not allow visible success to determine His direction. After being with His Father, He led the disciples elsewhere. The crowd saw opportunity. The disciples saw momentum. Jesus saw through the Father’s eyes. He noticed what was happening around Him, but He did not interpret reality by natural sight alone.

Visible demand was never His final guide. When Lazarus, whom Jesus deeply loved, became very ill, everyone expected Him to leave immediately and heal him. Yet He remained where He was for two more days before going to Bethany (John 11:5–7). After feeding thousands, the crowd wanted to make Him king. Natural eyes might have seen an extraordinary opportunity. Jesus recognized a temptation and withdrew alone. Even after His resurrection, He did not rush the discouraged disciples on the road to Emmaus. He walked with them, listened to their confusion, and gradually opened their eyes through Scripture.

Jesus was not careless about time. He was free from hurry because He was surrendered to His Father.

The Disorder of Hurried Christianity

The opposite of slowed-down spirituality is not merely fast activity. It is disordered life. Hurried Christianity begins when our focus shifts away from Jesus. Instead of following Him, we establish the goals, determine the pace, and assume responsibility for the results.

Soon, the whole person moves out of alignment with Christ. Our thinking becomes shaped by assumptions He has not taught us. Our loves attach themselves to recognition or success. Our motives become mixed, often without our noticing. Our actions may still look Christian while no longer flowing from Christ. This is why discipleship must involve the whole person. Jesus renews how we see and reshapes what we love. He purifies our motives so that our actions increasingly arise from a heart surrendered to Him.

Judas provides a sobering example. When Mary poured expensive perfume upon Jesus, Judas asked why it had not been sold and the money given to the poor (John 12:4–6). His concern sounded compassionate and just. Yet John tells us that Judas did not care about the poor. He was stealing from the money entrusted to him. His words sounded righteous. His motives were not.

Hurried Christianity rarely pauses to look beneath visible actions. It asks whether something appears effective or morally convincing. Jesus looks deeper. He asks what vision of reality guides us and what we love. He asks why we act and not just what we do.

Learning to See

Natural sight matters. Jesus noticed hunger, suffering, and need. But natural sight alone is insufficient. Natural eyes see a large crowd and assume God must be moving there. They see rapid growth and interpret it as divine favor. They see urgency and conclude that immediate action is required.

Spiritual sight pauses long enough to ask: Father, what are You doing?  Slowed-down spirituality gives God room to correct our perception. Our first interpretation may be shaped by fear, cultural assumptions, or hidden ambition. What appears wise from a human perspective may not reflect the way of Jesus. 

We therefore refuse to build merely upon what appears obvious. We wait for His wisdom. We would rather build slowly with Jesus than quickly without Him.

Anxious and Distracted Leadership

When leaders stop following Jesus at His pace, leadership becomes anxious. We begin carrying outcomes that belong to God. We become preoccupied with growth, influence, and public perception.

Anxious leadership soon becomes distracted leadership. We stop noticing what Jesus is doing because we are consumed with what we think must happen next. We rush past warning signs from our conscience and the Spirit, neglecting the foundational work of character and inner formation because visible progress feels more urgent. We may build a ministry before character can support its weight. We may expand responsibility before trust has developed. We may protect the appearance of success while relationships and inner lives deteriorate.

Anxiety can also lead to manipulation. When outcomes appear to depend upon us, people become tools for accomplishing our plans. Pressure replaces discernment, and control disguises itself as vision. Much may be accomplished. But in His parable of the wise and foolish builders, Jesus warned that a completed house can still collapse if it is not built upon the rock (Matthew 7:24–27).

The problem is not activity. The problem is building without first foundations — the hidden work of becoming rooted in Christ, formed in character, and grounded in trustworthy relationships before greater responsibility or visible growth is added.

Two Yokes

At the center of hurried Christianity is the struggle for control. Jesus offers another way: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29 NIV).  The yoke of control reaches constantly into the future.

• What if the ministry fails?

• What if I do not have enough?

• What if tomorrow does not unfold as planned?

Control demands certainty, but certainty about the future belongs to God. When we try to secure it for ourselves, we carry a weight no human being was created to bear. We may strive harder or attempt to manipulate circumstances. Eventually, we may lose hope and give up.

Jesus offers His yoke. His yoke is light because He carries what only He can carry. He carries tomorrow and the outcomes. He carries His kingdom. Our responsibility is real, but limited. We receive today’s grace. We obey today’s leading. We faithfully carry what Jesus has entrusted to us and leave tomorrow in His hands.

Give Us This Day

The Lord’s Prayer teaches this rhythm of trust: “Give us today our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11 NIV).  This is a prayer for provision, but it also teaches us how to live. Jesus trains us to receive life one day at a time from the Father’s hand.

Israel learned this through manna in the wilderness. God was not merely feeding them. He was retraining a people whose slave mentality had taught them to live by fear, scarcity, and self-protection rather than daily trust in God. They wanted to secure tomorrow’s provision today. God taught them to gather the manna they needed and trust that He would be faithful again in the morning. Every day carried the same question: Will we trust Him today?  Today’s bread is enough for today’s calling. Today’s grace is enough for today’s obedience.

Hurried Christianity tries to live tomorrow before today has been faithfully received. It wants the entire map before taking the next step. But Jesus rarely gives us the whole map. He gives us Himself. He is the living map for our lives.

God’s Process Is Part of His Purpose

Fast-paced Christianity looks for shortcuts. It asks how we can grow faster or become influential sooner. It searches for ways around hiddenness, waiting, and weakness. But Jesus’ temptations (Matthew 4:1-11) reveal that a shortcut can lead outside the Father’s will even when the destination appears good. Jesus was called to reign, but not by worshiping Satan. He was called to reveal His identity, but not through self-serving spectacle. He needed food, but He would not seize provision independently of His Father. The Father’s process was not an obstacle to Jesus’ calling. It was part of His calling.

God is not only concerned with where He is taking us. He is forming who we become along the way. Trust develops through experience. Love deepens through relationship. Christlike character forms through repeated surrender.

The great danger of hurried Christianity is that we move too quickly to notice Jesus transforming us while we are busy trying to accomplish things for Him.

The Grace of God’s Patience

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:9 NIV

Peter makes an important distinction: what may feel like slowness to us can actually be the patience of God at work. His patience gives people time to see, turn, and come into deeper alignment with Him.

God does not delay because He needs more time. As human beings, we do—whether we admit it or not, and whether we recognize the need or fail to see it. Our motives can be mixed, and our perceptions can be distorted. We can sincerely believe we are following God while actually being led by fear, ambition, or influences we have not yet recognized. We process life gradually. We need time to understand what God is showing us, recognize our hidden resistance, and allow truth to move from information into conviction.

God’s patience is not a limitation of His power. It is an expression of His grace. He honors the humanity He created. Rather than forcing outward compliance, He patiently leads us toward wholehearted alignment with Him. When formation is rushed, we may repeat the right language while remaining inwardly unconvinced. We may imitate expected behavior without owning the truth for ourselves.

God desires more than compliance. He desires wholehearted allegiance. He gives us room to wrestle with what He reveals and to work through the fears that keep us from obedience. Love cannot be forced. Trust cannot be hurried. Conviction cannot be borrowed. What feels like delay is often discipleship itself.

Waiting Reveals Who Is Leading

Throughout Scripture, waiting reveals allegiance. Abraham waited twenty-five years — from receiving God’s promise at age seventy-five until Isaac was born when he was one hundred (Genesis 12:4; 21:5). David also waited years between being anointed by Samuel and receiving the throne. Scripture does not tell us his age at his first anointing, so the exact interval is unknown. It does tell us that he did not begin reigning until he was thirty (1 Samuel 16:1–13; 2 Samuel 5:4). The disciples waited about ten days in Jerusalem between Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 1:3–14; 2:1–4). These were not empty intervals. Each period required God’s people to continue trusting His leadership without controlling how or when His promise would be fulfilled. 

King Saul was also told to wait for Samuel. When Samuel appeared delayed, Saul took control and offered the sacrifice himself (1 Samuel 13). The issue was not merely a broken procedure. Waiting revealed who Saul believed should lead. Would he remain under God’s word when the delay became uncomfortable, or would he assume control?

Waiting asks the same question of us. Do we truly want to follow Jesus, or do we merely want Him to approve the path we have chosen? Slowed-down spirituality says:

• “I trust Your timing more than my urgency.”

• “I trust Your wisdom more than my first interpretation.”

• “I would rather wait than build apart from You.”

Waiting is not inactivity. It is active surrender to the leadership of God.

God Gives Us Time to Become

Jesus did not merely tell people the truth. He patiently led them into it. He asked questions and told stories. He allowed people to wrestle with what He said. He repeatedly explained truths His disciples failed to understand. He did not abandon them because they were slow to learn. He walked with them.

God gives us time to process what He reveals so that we can align ourselves with Him fully and freely. He exposes the motives beneath our actions and the fears beneath our need for control. His goal is not merely that we perform the correct behavior. 

He is forming people who increasingly see the goodness of His ways and joyfully choose them. That is the pace of grace.

Patience with Ourselves and Others

This changes how we treat ourselves. Many of us are harsh because we are not yet where we believe we should be. We condemn ourselves for spiritual immaturity or for not accomplishing more in ministry. We forget that the God who calls us forward is also the God who patiently forms us. Slowed-down spirituality does not excuse disobedience or remove the call to maturity. It teaches us not to confuse unfinished formation with failure. 

This also changes how we treat others. When we believe we are making great visible progress in comparison with others, we may become impatient with those who appear to be growing more slowly. We begin demanding from them what God patiently gave us years to understand. We compare their present struggle with the visible results of our longer journey.

Jesus never confused immaturity with hopelessness. He saw what His disciples could become before they saw it themselves. He corrected them truthfully and continued walking with them patiently. Comparison measures people by where they appear to be. Love sees who, by God’s grace, they are becoming. 

One sign that we are learning the pace of Jesus is that we increasingly extend to ourselves and others the patience He has extended to us.

Why Does God Take Formation So Seriously?

Why is God so patient with the formation process? Because His purpose is deeper than simply bringing us safely into eternity with Him. God is committed to conforming us to the image of His Son and forming people whose lives increasingly reflect Jesus in this world.

That kind of formation cannot be rushed. God is working deeply in people with real agency, patiently teaching us to recognize His voice, submit to His ways, and increasingly embody His character. He is not interested in producing outwardly successful believers who remain inwardly unformed.

And the stakes extend beyond us. Followers who resist the ways of Jesus can reproduce a distorted faith in others — people who bear His name while being formed away from His likeness. At best, this complicates the formation of others; at worst, it can become an obstacle to people encountering Christ and becoming genuine disciples.

He is not merely multiplying Christians in name only; He is forming people who can faithfully represent His Son and help others walk the path of Jesus. This is why God does not take formation lightly. It is His delight to form a people who increasingly bear the likeness of Christ and become living witnesses to what He is like.

Christianity Is Wonderfully Simple

The invitation of Jesus has never changed: “Follow Me.”  He does not first invite us to accomplish impressive things for Him. He invites us to walk with Him. We do not have to run ahead and establish the route. We do not have to remain behind because fear has immobilized us. We do not have to pursue another agenda while asking Jesus to bless it. We stay close. We listen. We trust. We follow.

Christianity is wonderfully simple because Jesus leads and we follow. Every day, we receive today’s bread and respond to today’s leading. Tomorrow belongs to Him.

Slowed-down spirituality is not about accomplishing less. It is about refusing to do more or less than love and obedience require.

• It is carrying only what Jesus asks us to carry. (“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”— Mathew 11:30)

• It is building only what He is leading us to build. (“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain...” — Psalm 127:1a)

• It is trusting that the One who knows the end from the beginning can lead us one faithful step at a time. (“I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come...” — Isaiah 46:10a)

The pace of Jesus is the pace of trust. It is the pace of grace. And it is the pace at which He patiently forms us into His likeness.
